Security Measures Needed To Quell Manufacturers’ Fear Of Intellectual Property Theft

Following the Aberdeen Group survey results, which show that two-thirds of manufacturers fear the theft of their intellectual property, industrial security specialist Innominate says that security is key to combating this threat.
“These survey results are not surprising,” said Innominate CEO Joachim Fietz. “As many as 40 per cent of the companies that engage Innominate’s services site the threat of intellectual property theft as high up on their agenda.
“The automotive and pharmaceutical sectors see themselves as particularly vulnerable and it’s easy to see why. A virus or malware in these environments could devastate a production line by halting manufacture, but the theft of critical information relating to formulas, or moulding specifications could result in competitive advantage being gained by another company - without any of the financial outlay in research and development. In business that is an equation that simply does not add up, so it has to be prevented,” asserts Joachim.
Companies are particularly vulnerable to passing data to the outside during the installation of new machinery or new controller systems. The best approach, according to Innominate, is to deploy distributed security in the production network which would allow newly installed machinery to have its address recognised and the data held automatically protected.
“As globalisation continues to place pressure upon manufacturers to innovate we [Innominate] anticipate that future machine makers will respond to concerns about the loss of intellectual property by integrating firewalls into production machinery, well before they hit the factory floor,” concluded Joachim.
